Buyer's Guide
Everything You Need to Know About Custom Metal Labels
New to sourcing metal labels for your fashion brand? This guide walks you through
everything — from what a metal label actually is, to how it's made, what materials
to choose, and how to place your first order with confidence.
01What Is a Metal Label?
A metal label is a small decorative and functional hardware piece — typically made
from brass, zinc alloy, stainless steel, or aluminum — that carries your brand's
logo, name, or artwork. It is permanently attached to a fashion product such as a
handbag, garment, belt, shoe, or luggage item.
Unlike woven or printed labels, metal labels communicate premium craftsmanship
through their weight, sheen, and tactile quality. When a customer picks up your
product, the metal label is often the first thing they touch — and it sets an
immediate expectation of quality.
Metal labels are also commonly called metal tags, logo plates, brand plaques, metal nameplates, or metal patches — they all refer to the same category of product.
02Materials Explained
The base metal you choose affects the weight, durability, cost, and overall feel
of your label. Here's a straightforward breakdown of the most common options
and when to use each one.

Recommendation for new brands: Zinc alloy offers the best balance of detail reproduction, finish quality, and cost — making it the most popular choice for first-time custom metal label orders.
03Surface Finishes
The finish is the final surface treatment applied to your metal label. It defines
the color, texture, and sheen — and has the biggest visual impact on how your
label looks on the final product. Finishes are applied after the base metal is
shaped, so the same label design can be offered in multiple colorways.
Gold Plating
Electroplated gold layer over base metal. Available in bright gold, light gold, and antique gold. The most requested finish for luxury fashion labels.
Silver / Nickel Plating
Bright or brushed silver finish. Pairs well with cool-toned brand palettes. Note: nickel-free options are available for EU REACH compliance.
Matte Black / Black PVD
A modern, stealth aesthetic. PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating offers superior scratch resistance compared to standard black electroplating.
Antique Brass / Bronze
A chemically aged finish that gives labels a vintage, worn appearance. Popular for heritage brands, artisan leather goods, and Western-inspired fashion.
Rose Gold
A warm pink-gold tone achieved through copper-alloy plating. Highly popular in women's accessories, cosmetics packaging, and lifestyle brands.
Gunmetal
A dark grey metallic finish, darker than silver but lighter than black. Gives labels a raw, industrial edge — favored by streetwear and outdoor brands.
Enamel Color Fill
Colored enamel paint is filled into recessed areas of the logo to add brand colors. Ideal for logos with specific Pantone color requirements.
Brushed Finish
Fine parallel lines are mechanically applied to create a satin texture. Reduces fingerprint visibility and gives a refined, understated look compared to polished variants.
04Attachment Methods
How your metal label is attached to the product is a critical practical decision —
it affects the manufacturing process on your production line, the durability of the
label under everyday use, and the overall aesthetic result.
A
Sew-On Holes
2 or 4 small holes punched around the edge of the label. Thread is passed through and stitched to the fabric or leather substrate. Simple, strong, and fully permanent — no special tools needed on the assembly line.
B
Rivet Post
A short post protrudes from the back of the label. It punches through the material and a cap is pressed on from the other side to lock it in place. Creates a very clean front-facing look with no visible stitching.
C
Screw Back
Two-part system: the label face has threaded posts, and a backing plate screws onto the posts through the material. This allows the label to be removed and reattached — useful for sampling and display pieces.
D
Self-Adhesive
Industrial 3M-grade double-sided tape pre-applied to the back of the label. Press-and-stick application — no sewing or tooling required. Best for smooth, flat surfaces like packaging boxes or hard cases.
E
Hang Ring / Chain
A punched hole at the top of the label allows a split ring, jump ring, or chain to pass through. The label hangs freely as a tag — suitable for jewelry, bags, and keychains.
F
Weld / Epoxy Bond
For hard-surface applications (metal products, hard cases, rigid accessories), labels can be welded or bonded with structural epoxy adhesive for a completely seamless, permanent attachment.
05How Metal Labels Are Made
Understanding the basic manufacturing process helps you communicate more clearly
with your supplier, set realistic expectations for lead times, and appreciate
why certain design choices affect cost.
Die Making
A custom steel die (mold) is machined based on your logo artwork. This is a one-time tooling cost and is what gives your label its precise shape and engraved detail. The same die is reused for all future reorders.
Stamping or Casting
For flat labels, sheet metal is stamped (pressed) through the die under high pressure. For 3D or complex shapes, molten metal is injected into a casting mold. Stamping is faster and lower cost; casting allows more detail and depth.
Trimming & Deburring
Excess metal ("flash") is trimmed away and all edges are smoothed. This ensures the label has clean edges that won't snag on fabric or scratch the wearer.
Surface Treatment
The label goes through electroplating, PVD coating, or chemical finishing to achieve the desired color and texture. For enamel fill, color is applied by hand and baked in an oven to cure.
Quality Inspection
Each batch is inspected for dimensional accuracy, surface consistency, color matching (against approved Pantone or sample), and plating adhesion. Defective pieces are culled before packaging.
Packaging & Shipment
Labels are individually bagged or packed in trays to prevent surface scratching during transit. Export cartons are labeled with your PO details, quantity, and batch number for easy warehouse receiving.
06How to Choose the Right Metal Label
With so many options available, the best approach is to work backwards from your
product and brand positioning. Use the decision framework below to narrow down
your choices before reaching out to a manufacturer.

What is your brand's price positioning?

07Quick FAQ for First-Time Buyers
Do I need to provide a die/mold myself?
No. Lustrim creates the die in-house based on your logo artwork. You pay a one-time tooling fee (which is credited back on larger orders), and we handle the rest. Your die remains on file for all future reorders.
Can I get the same label in multiple finishes?
Yes. Once your die is made, you can order the same label shape in as many different finishes as you like — gold, silver, black, antique — each as a separate SKU. This is a great way to offer seasonal colorways.
How small or large can a metal label be?
We produce labels from as small as 8mm × 8mm up to 120mm × 80mm for standard die-struck pieces. Larger sizes are possible via casting. Very small labels require simpler logo designs due to fine-detail limitations at tiny scales.
Will the plating wear off over time?
Standard electroplating has a micron thickness that can wear with heavy abrasion over years of use. For products requiring exceptional longevity (outdoor gear, high-friction areas), we recommend PVD coating or stainless steel base material, both of which offer significantly better wear resistance.
Can metal labels be washed or dry-cleaned?
Most metal labels tolerate normal garment washing when properly attached with sew-on or rivet methods. We recommend avoiding prolonged soaking, bleach, and high-temperature tumble drying, which can affect plating over time. Adhesive labels are not recommended for washable garments.
What's the difference between embossed and debossed?
Embossed means the logo or text is raised above the surface of the label. Debossed means it is pressed below the surface, creating a recessed impression. Both are created via the die-striking process and are available at no extra cost — it depends purely on how the die is cut.
