Shank Button Guide – Everything You Need to Know

The Complete Beginner's Guide
to Shank Buttons
Everything a fashion buyer, uniform sourcing manager, or brand owner needs
to know — from what a shank button actually is, to how to choose the right

Section 01
What Exactly Is a Shank Button?
If you're new to sourcing garment trims, the term "shank button" might sound
technical — but the concept is simple. A shank button is a button that has
no holes on its visible face. Instead, a small hidden loop
(called the "shank") protrudes from the back of the button. Thread passes
through this loop to attach the button to fabric, keeping the front surface
completely clean and uninterrupted.
In simple terms: Think of the shank as a tiny built-in stem.
The button "stands proud" of the fabric rather than sitting flat against it —
which is exactly what you need when fastening thick coats, blazers, or jackets
where multiple fabric layers need to pass through the buttonhole.
Shank Button vs. Flat (Sew-Through) Button
The other common button type is the flat sew-through button
— the kind with 2 or 4 visible holes on its face, familiar from everyday shirts.
Here's how they compare:
Feature

Buyer's tip: If your collection includes any garment with
structured fabric, lining, or a thick buttonhole band — a shank button
is almost always the right choice. The shank creates the necessary
clearance so the button doesn't pull, pucker, or stress the fabric.
Section 02
How Does a Shank Button Actually Work?
Understanding the mechanics helps you specify buttons correctly and
brief your factory — or us — with confidence.
The Role of the Shank
When a garment is buttoned, multiple layers of fabric sit between the button
and the body. The shank — that small protruding loop — creates a physical
gap (called "standing space") that accommodates this fabric stack without
distorting the garment's front face. Without a shank, thick fabric pulls
the button backward, creating an unsightly pucker.
Clean Front Face
No thread stitching disrupts the embossed logo or decorative surface — the entire face belongs to your brand.
Fabric Protection
The standing space reduces wear on the buttonhole edge — particularly important on expensive coating and outerwear fabrics.
Easier Fastening
The elevated position makes buttons easier to grip and pass through buttonholes — especially on thick winter outerwear.
Professional Finish
Shank buttons are a universal signal of quality construction — instantly elevating the perceived value of your garment.
Shank Types: Metal Shank vs. Thread Shank
Not all shanks are the same. There are two main variants you'll encounter
when sourcing custom buttons:
Self-shank (moulded / cast shank): The loop is formed as
part of the button itself during casting or moulding. This is the standard
on all our custom metal and resin shank buttons — strong, consistent, and
impossible to detach.
Separate metal shank: A pre-formed metal loop is glued or
press-fitted onto the back of a decorative button face. Common in rhinestone
and shell buttons where drilling a cast loop is impractical.
What to specify when ordering: For most custom metal buttons,
you don't need to specify shank type — a cast self-shank is standard.
For rhinestone or shell styles, confirm with your account manager whether
the shank is glued or crimped, as this affects wash durability.
Section 03
Choosing the Right Material
Material is the single most important decision you'll make when ordering
custom shank buttons. It determines durability, appearance, weight,
price point, and what logo techniques are possible.
Here's an honest breakdown of every option:
Buyer's tip: If you want your brand logo on the button,
zinc alloy is almost always the best starting point — it offers the widest
range of logo techniques, the most finish options, and the best
durability-to-cost ratio. Natural materials (shell, horn, wood) look
beautiful but cannot carry a brand logo.
Section 04
Logo Techniques — Which One Is Right for You?
How your logo appears on a button is just as important as the material.
Each technique creates a different visual effect, carries a different
price point, and suits different brand aesthetics.
Technique
How It Looks
Best For
Durability
Embossed (3D Raised)
Logo stands proud of button surface — tactile, bold, three-dimensional
Logo pressed into the surface — subtle, refined, low-key luxury
Minimalist brands, understated premium labels
Excellent
Laser Engraved
Ultra-precise fine-line detail — photographic accuracy possible
Complex logos, fine typography, intricate patterns
Excellent
Colour Fill (Painted)
Debossed logo areas filled with enamel paint — brand colour visible
Brands with strong colour identity, uniform programmes
Good (avoid harsh detergents)
Crystal Glue Coat
Clear resin domed over logo — high-gloss, reflective finish
Fashion-forward labels, premium casualwear
Good (handle with care)
Not sure which technique fits your logo? Send us your
artwork file and we'll recommend the best technique based on your logo's
line weight, detail level, and brand aesthetic — at no charge.
Section 05
Button Sizing — The Right Size for Every Garment
Button sizes are measured in lignes (abbreviated "L" or
"ligne") — an old French unit still used universally in the button industry.
One ligne equals approximately 0.635 mm. Here's a practical reference
for the garment types most commonly ordered by our clients:
Garment Type
Recommended Size
Approx. mm
Notes
Dress shirts / Blouses
16 – 20 L
10 – 13 mm

Trousers / Skirts (waistband)

Uniforms (corporate/military)

15 – 23 mm

Sizing tip: When in doubt, order a sample set across
two or three adjacent sizes (e.g. 28L, 32L, 36L) and test them against
your garment toile before committing to bulk production.
Our sample lead time is 7–14 working days.

Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions we hear most often from buyers placing their
first custom button order. If your question isn't here,
contact our team — we reply within 24 hours.
Our MOQ is 300 pieces per style. This applies to
all standard and custom designs, regardless of material.
No — the mould fee is a one-time charge. Once your
custom mould is made and approved, it is stored at our facility
and used for all future reorders at no additional tooling cost.
For new custom orders (including mould-making and a physical sample),
the typical timeline is 25–35 working days from artwork
approval to shipment. For reorders using an existing mould, lead time
reduces to approximately 15–20 working days.
Rush production is available — ask your account manager about timelines.
Yes — always. We produce a pre-production physical sample
after mould completion and ship it to your address for approval.
Bulk production only begins once you have confirmed the sample in writing.
This is a non-negotiable part of our process — your peace of mind
is built into the workflow.
Yes. We offer materials that are REACH compliant and
tested to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100. Nickel-free plating
options are available across all our metal button ranges — important
for EU market products subject to the Nickel Directive.
SGS third-party test reports are available on request.
The ideal format is a vector file (.AI, .EPS, or .PDF)
with clean paths and no raster effects. If you only have a high-resolution
PNG or JPG, our design team can work with it — but vector files give
the sharpest results for embossing and laser engraving.
We'll always send you a digital proof to approve before any mould is made.
Yes. Many of our clients order 4–12 different styles
in a single consolidated shipment — for example, a front button, sleeve
button, and back vent button for a blazer collection.
Each style requires its own MOQ of 300 pieces, and all can ship together
to reduce freight costs.
